It is ILLEGAL to transport and introduce Exotic Aquatic Plants in New Hampshire

New Hampshire Lakes Association, NHLA - The goal of the Lake Host Program is to prevent the spread of exotic milfoil and other invasive aquatic plants in New Hampshire. Trained New Hampshire Lakes Association Lake Hosts stationed at public motorized boat ramps distribute brochures, complete a brief boater survey, and conduct voluntary, courtesy boat and trailer inspections.  In 2010 paid and volunteer NH Lake Hosts recorded  268 SAVES  statewide!

The MPPA received a $750 payroll grant from the New Hampshire Lakes Association and a $3100 grant from the Town of New London to continue our Lake Host Program on Messer Pond for the 4th year this past summer of 2010.  The goal of the Lake Host Program is to prevent the spread of exotic milfoil and other invasive aquatic plants into New Hampshire waters.  The Program is educational in nature, whereby trained Lake Hosts stationed at public motorized boat ramps (1) educate visiting boaters about exotic plants by distributing brochures, answering questions, and completing a brief boater survey; (2) conduct courtesy boat and trailer inspections on vessels; and (3) show boaters where to look for plants on boats and encourage them to “self-inspect.”  In addition, Lake Hosts remove and properly dispose of all plant material found; and send samples of “suspicious” plants removed to the NH Department of Environmental Services for identification.

The Lake Host program is a wonderful complement to our Weed Watching and Water Quality Monitoring programs.  It offers a great opportunity to participate in further protecting our pond and, for the paid hosts, to earn some money.  Paid Lake Hosts will earn $10 per hour and must be at least 18 years of age.  Paid Lake Hosts are paid directly by the New Hampshire Lakes Association on a biweekly basis.

All Messer Pond residents seeking additional information about this program and/or interested in participating as either a paid Lake Host or a volunteer Lake Host should contact Terri Bingham, the Messer Pond Lake Host Point Person and Weed Watch Chairperson, by phone at 526-4202 or by email at littlecove@tds.net
